The Coro Juvenil of the Vilar do Paraíso Music Academy made its debut at the Teatro Rivoli in Porto in 1984, under the direction of maestro José de Castro, who dedicated himself to its direction for over twenty years. Since its foundation, this choir has participated in several concerts and choir meetings both in Portugal and abroad, including: European Music Festivals for Young People (Neerpelt, 1986, 1994, 1996, 2002), where it won two first places and a first prize cum laude, 3rd Neuchatel Choral Music Festival (Switzerland, 1989), where it received an honourable mention, International Music Festivals for Young People in Vila Nova de Gaia, Madeira Choir Festival, 1001 Musicians Concert (CCB- Lisbon, 2007 and 2008), Concert in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid, 2008), Opening Gala of the World School Sports Championship (Fafe, 2009), Gaia Rotary Club Concerts (Espinho, 2010, 2012 and 2013), Closing Concert Guimarães European Capital of Culture (Guimarães, 2012), Bla la la Festival, exchange with Choeur Maîtrisien Wasquehal (Gaia, 2013), “Requiem” Concert by John Rutter (Gaia, 2013), Concerts in Lille, exchange with Choeur Maîtrisien Wasquehal (Lille, 2013), “Requiem” Concert by Bob Chilcott (Gaia, 2014), Children's Opera “The Legend of the Three Trees” by Allen Pote (Casa da Música- Porto, 2018), Opera “The Magic Flute” by W. Amadeus Mozart - reduced version (Gaia, 2019), Festival Choir Provence (Bandol, 2022), Circle Singing and Concert with Sofia Ribeiro (Barcelona, 2023) . The choir had Bruno Pereira as conductor between 2007 and 2018, with the exception of 2009 and 2010 when it was conducted by Iryna Horbatyuk. With a varied repertoire, this choir is currently a subject of the basic and secondary Music course at our academy with students aged between 14 and 18 years old. Since 2018, it has been conducted by Patrícia Quinta and Pedro Ludgero as an accompanying pianist.
Patrícia Quinta was born in Porto and is a Portuguese mezzo-soprano with an extensive career in opera and concert performance. She graduated in Lied and Oratory from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in 2007, studying with Margit Klaushofer and Charles Spencer, after completing a bachelor’s degree in Theatrical Singing at the Gaia Conservatory of Music in the class of Fernanda Correia. She has appeared in numerous operatic productions at the São Carlos National Theatre, performing roles such as Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), Alisa (Lucia di Lammermoor), Dame Marthe (Faust), Laura (Iolanta), Third Nymph (Rusalka), Afra (La Wally), Rossweisse (Die Walküre), Aufseherin (Elektra), Marquesa de Berkenfield (La Fille du Régiment) and the Old Lady (Candide). More recently, she joined the cast of the premiere of the opera It’s Not Over Until the Soprano Dies at the São Luiz Theatre, produced by the Mala Voadora theatre company, with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra conducted by Nuno Côrte-Real. Her concert activity includes recitals and performances of works by Mahler, Wagner and Strauss. In 2003, she was awarded the Bocage Prize at the Luísa Todi National Singing Competition. She has attended masterclasses with distinguished artists such as Ulf Bästlein, Enza Ferrari, Elsa Saque, Laura Sarti, Rudolf Piernay, Grace Bumbry, Hilde Zadek and Christa Ludwig, the latter two with whom she worked regularly. In addition to her musical career, she holds a degree in Psychology from the University of Porto and has been a singing and choir teacher at the Academia de Música de Vilar do Paraíso since 2009.
