Mixed Choir Obala Koper
Slovenia
The Mixed Choir Obala Koper unites singers from the Slovene Primorska region since 1977. Almost 400 singers have been part of the choir through the years, and since September 2017, the choir is led by the renowned composer and conductor Andrej Makor. Obala has won thirteen gold plates at the most important national choral competition Naša pesem in Maribor, the last one in 2024, and an impressive number of prizes abroad (among which Tonen 2000 Netherlands 2006; Miltenberg 2010, Seghizzi 2011, Torrevieja 2013, Zlatna Vila Prijedor 2014, Split 2015, CorAmare Sestri Levante 2019, Musica Eterna Rome 2023). Obala often performs at official municipality and state events, cooperates with other choirs and orchestras and also stimulates the production of music by commissioning new compositions. Additionally, the choir devotes itself to fostering high quality choral singing and to spreading the culture of choirs with the organization of the biennial International Choir Festival Koper.
Andrej Makor
Conductor / Leader
Andrej Makor studied at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, where he graduated in music teaching, solo singing and music composition. He obtained his master’s degree in music composition at the conservatory in Padua (Italy). As a composer, he won a number of prizes and received recognition both in Slovenia and abroad, some of the latest ones in Austin (USA, 2016), Barcelona (Spain, 2016), Arezzo (Italy, 2016), Köln (Germany, 2017), Weimar (Germany, 2017), Ljubljana (Slovenia, 2017), Vancouver (Canada, 2017) and London (Great Britain, 2018). His compositions are regularly performed at national and international choir competitions and have been published in several collections at important national and international publishing houses. He regularly cooperates with selected Slovene choirs and famous international ensembles (BBC Singers, Vancouver Chamber Choir, BYU Singers, Salt Lake Vocal Artists, Neuer Chor Berlin and others). He is also a solo singing teacher at the Music School Koper, and holds seminars on vocal technique for ensembles all around Slovenia.
