The Children and Youth Centre “Riga Pupils Palace” is an open and multifunctional centre dedicated to developing creative talent, preserving folk traditions, and safeguarding cultural heritage. The children and youth kokle ensemble “Austriņa”, named after a deity in Latvian mythology, has been active at the centre for more than 40 years under the leadership of its founder, Iveta Tauriņa. All members play the traditional Latvian instrument, the kokle, using both the ethnographic instrument and the modern 30-string concert kokle, which allows the ensemble to perform Latvian folk music, classical arrangements, contemporary compositions, and modern works. Polyphonic singing, an integral part of Latvian cultural tradition, also forms an important part of the ensemble’s repertoire. Over several generations, “Austriņa” has provided young musicians with valuable musical and practical life education. The ensemble regularly participates in the Latvian Song and Dance Festivals and has performed extensively in Latvia and across Europe, as well as in Canada.
Iveta Tauriņa is a distinguished Latvian conductor, kokle teacher, and leading figure in the development of Latvian folk music traditions. Since 1981, she has been the founder and artistic leader of the Kokle Ensemble “Austriņa” at Riga Pupils Palace, and since 2002, she has led the middle-generation Kokle Ensemble “Kokļu klubs” at Riga’s Small Guild. She holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Sciences and is a qualified kokle and music teacher. Tauriņa has served as Chief Conductor of the Pierīga Region Kokle Ensembles, a Folk Music Expert on the Song and Dance Festival Council, and a member of the Expert Council of the Latvian National Centre for Culture. She has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of numerous major kokle concerts at the Latvian Song and Dance Festivals and School Youth Song Festivals. Her artistic work also includes original compositions and folk song arrangements published in five collections, as well as directing numerous music recordings. Through decades of conducting, teaching, and artistic leadership, Iveta Tauriņa has made a significant contribution to Latvia’s kokle music and cultural heritage.
