Izmir American College, founded in 1878, is a private academic high school located in Izmir, Türkiye. It is not a music conservatory; all musical activities are extracurricular and take place voluntarily, with students dedicating their personal time and staying after school once a week to participate in rehearsals and performances. The Izmir American College Classical Music Orchestra, a non-professional, student-based ensemble, was established in 2008 by music teacher Çağrı Düzalan. Comprising approximately 45 students aged 14 to 16, primarily from the preparatory, 9th, and 10th grade levels, the orchestra undergoes continual renewal each academic year as about half of its members graduate and are replaced by younger students. Despite being a school-based ensemble, the orchestra has gained international recognition through its participation in several prestigious competitions. Led by Çağrı Düzalan—an accomplished opera artist and conductor who is the only professional musician in the group—the student members contribute their time and passion entirely on a voluntary basis. The orchestra’s notable achievements include Third Prize at the XIII Art Festival Contest “Charm of Bohemia” in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2018, along with the Grand Prize in the Classical Piano category; Third Prize at the 2019 Legend of Mediterranean International Art & Music Contest in Lloret de Mar, Spain; First Prize at the 2023 Sea Sun International Art & Music Contest in Girona–Lloret de Mar, Spain; and a Special Jury Prize at the 2024 International Music Competition in Sanremo, Italy. The Izmir American College Classical Music Orchestra continues its musical journey with dedication and passion under the leadership of its founder, conductor, and educator, Çağrı Düzalan, by performing three major concerts annually and participating in at least one prestigious competition or festival each year.
Çağrı Düzalan was born in 1975 in İzmir, Türkiye, where he completed his primary, secondary, and high school education. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Opera (Performing Arts) from Dokuz Eylül University State Conservatory and went on to complete a second master’s degree—a Master of Music in Music Education—from the Department of Fine Arts Education at Ege University, graduating with high honors in both programs. During his studies, he enriched his musical foundation with solfeggio and composition lessons from distinguished professors. From 1998 to 2004, he performed as both a soloist and chorister at the İzmir State Opera and Ballet, appearing in numerous productions including Rigoletto (G. Verdi), The Barber of Seville (G. Rossini), Nasreddin Hoca (Sabahattin Kalender), Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (Selman Ada), Faust (C. Gounod), The Tales of Hoffmann (J. Offenbach), L’elisir d’amore (G. Donizetti), Nabucco (G. Verdi), and Norma (V. Bellini), as well as in many concerts featuring the works of Mozart and Verdi. In 2007, he was selected through a competitive process to participate in the Sieur Duluth Summer Opera Festival in Minnesota, USA, where he performed in Lucia di Lammermoor (G. Donizetti) and Carmen (G. Bizet). During the 2007–2008 season, he also appeared as a guest performer with the İzmir State Theatre in productions of Treasure Island (R. L. Stevenson) and Die Entführung der Dona Agatha (G. Pausewang). Since 2008, Çağrı Düzalan has been a dedicated music teacher in the Arts Department of İzmir American College. He founded the İzmir American College Classical Music Orchestra, for which he prepares the repertoire and serves as conductor—a role he continues to fulfill with passion. A seasoned musician and vocal coach proficient in piano, violin, and guitar, he has spent over 18 years inspiring and mentoring students, nurturing not only their musical talents but also a deep and lasting love for the art.
